Community would like to see a bitcoin emoji
The Bitcoin community is rallying to get an official emoji for the top cryptocurrency. An anonymous person started a petition to get the Unicode Consortium to add Bitcoin to its list of chat images. They believe such an emoji would create more awareness to the cryptocurrency space. At the moment the petition on Change.org has less than 100 signatures.
The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization from California that governs the world standard for text and emoji on the web. Currently there are emojis for the money bag (💰), currency exchange (💱), heavy dollar sign’ (💲), dollar banknotes (💵), euro banknotes (💶), and the money that’s leaving your pocket (💸). However, there are no icons referring to Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies.
If the Unicode Consortium would create a standardized emoji for Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general, it would give a boost to the general awareness. Introducing an emoji would bring the Bitcoin logo to a whole new audience. There’s an entire generation that communicates through emoji’s, and adding Bitcoin to their ‘vocabulary’ would create a lot of awareness.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Unicode Consortium recognizes Bitcoin. Back in 2017 they approved the Bitcoin symbol (₿) as part of Unicode 10.0. The ₿-symbol has unicode U+20BF.
What would this Bitcoin emoji look like?
The petition doesn’t show any design proposals. Obviously a Bitcoin emoji can just be the symbol in a nice color, but we’re talking about emoji’s here. So let’s try to be a bit more expressive and creative. What about an ‘Bitcoin to the moon’ emoji? Or one that’s more aimed at trading and market trends: a bear and a bull? Or maybe we should have one to symbolize stacking sats.
If bitcoin would ever become a dominant force in the financial world, we’d not be paying entire bitcoins most of the time. In general we’d be paying fractions of bitcoin. One bitcoin consists out of 100 million satoshi, or sat in short. The problem is that such a satoshi doesn’t have a symbol yet, but that’s another story.
Stacking sats has become an expression to symbolize the act of hoarding bitcoin but saving small fragments of the cryptocurrency. For example, loyalty and reward program Lolli uses ‘stacking sats’ as a major part of its online marketing campaign to show people that can earn bitcoin by using their shopping service.
