Introducing Tears of the Gods

Gods Unchained DeFi Challenge

This is my entry into the competition…

Gods Unchained is a trading card game with a play-to-earn mechanism. Players get a bunch of free non-blockchain cards when they start playing. As they perform well, they will earn cards. When they have doubles, these can be minted into a blockchain card. In turn this card can potentially be sold on an open marketplace. That’s the current state of Gods Unchained in a nutshell.

The developers already announced plans for special event cards, that can only be minted by combining a certain combination of cards. I’m pretty sure they will wait with this feature until they have their own marketplace in place, which won’t have to deal with those crazy Ethereum gas fees.

At this point there are two things that stand out:

  1. Earning cards by minting them
  2. Combining blockchain cards into a new card (not live yet)

Now here’s my idea…

In order for Gods Unchained to truly embrace decentralized finance, all kinds of players need to be able to participate. From the shrimps to the whales, so to say. Players who have only minted one card, can participate.

  • This DeFi idea will introduce a new token/currency, let’s call it Tears of the Gods. $TEAR — we call them $TEAR because of the following concept:
  • Players can earn $TEAR by BURNING their cards. They are burning their warriors, saddening the gods. Let’s say 1 $TEAR per card, depending on the rarity.
  • However, they can also pool their cards. So instead of seeing packs of 30x Sentinel Princess on OpenSea, these cards will end up in the Sentinel Princess pool.
  • When another players uses that pool to get more cards to level up their Sentinel Princess, the pool contributors receive let’s say 1000 $TEAR. Each staker / contributor to the pool earns a percentage equal to their stake.
  • This way cards are burned, increasing their rarity. While $TEAR are created. Pool rewards on $TEAR should always be bigger than just a regular burn. (mentioned above, at point two)
  • In turn $TEAR can be used to unleash the wrath of the gods. Gather enough $TEAR and you can ask the gods for forgiveness by placing the $TEAR on an altar. The gods will grant the player a seasonal card that’s only available for a limited time. This can be an alternate version of an existing card (Christmas hats), or cards build around a marketing partnership with other projects (www.playtoearn.online — just saying).
  • Ultimately $TEAR could also be used to acquire raffle tickets for certain giveaways, or a way to enter a special competition.
  • If the sacrifice is — let’s say — 5.000 $TEAR, there’s a 60% change on a meteorite card, 30% shadow etc. If you would excess that limit and offer 7.634 $TEAR, the chance for a higher rarity card goes up. There’s always a chance to get just a meteorite, but appeal to the gods well enough and there’s a good chance they will grant you a very rare card.
  • The pricing of these promotional / seasonal cards need to be steep, and above all limited time only. And they should only be available in exchange for $TEAR. In turn players will be able to buy $TEAR from each other, or buy the seasonal card on the open marketplace. That’s all up to the player.
  • This concept allows players to contribute to a game mechanic without putting it on the marketplace. However, they can obviously lose their cards, because these cards are picked up to be burned. This would mean they can no longer earn $TEAR. The moment a card is removed from the pool, the original owner gets a bag of $TEAR depending on the rarity of the card. So Meteorite would get you 5 $TEAR, while Shadow gets you 15 $TEAR. (numbers need to checked of course)

Cool things about this particular DeFi mechanic:

  • It creates another layer for players who want to play-to-earn
  • It allows even players with just a few cards to contribute to the community and earn some $TEAR on the side.
  • It taps into the existing pool of cards, either genesis, core or following seasons. Depleting the circulation supply, creating rarity.
  • In addition it would remove those 30x Same Card Name sales from the marketplace, as there’s a more interesting way to use those cards.
