Tides of Magic getting cards from other games
Gamers who enjoy blockchain games like Axie Infinity and Flowerpatch will soon see their in-game assets on digital cards in the trading card game Tides of Magic. The developers of this newly announced card game want to utilize the ERC-720 token standard to pull other in-game assets into their game. As a result the card game might contain cards based on other Ethereum-based blockchain games.
The first integrated cards come from two games called Axie Infinity and Flowerpatch. Even though theirs already a deal with two game studios, the developers acknowledge that their idea is ‘a challenging hurdle’. They aren’t able to just rip-off artwork and brands in their game. The studio needs to work together with other studios to really get this idea to come to life.
The base game of Tides of Magic offers five different schools of magic. Each of these decks has their own packs of cards, which came in both a standard and an elite version. Packs of cards can score you minions, spells, and habitats. Minions fight for you, spells perform special actions and habitats produce mana.
A standard pack of cards costs 0.0272 ETH, while elite cards a double the price. There are legend packs as well. These grant the highest chance of getting rare cards. The price is set at 0.272 ETH. In the future cards can be sold on the OpenSea marketplace, but this feature won’t be enabled yet. The developers first want to balance the cards better by listening to player feedback.
Blockchain games ideal for cross-promotions
Even though Tides of Magic is taking the integration of game assets a bit further, they are not the first to embrace the concept. Last week Alterverse announced it would promote its upcoming release by distributing game items in another game.
In addition there’s an entire blockchain project aimed at this concept. A blockchain gaming startup called Enjin is creating a multiverse, where certain in-game assets have different functionalities in a variety of games. Their value is expressed in the native ENJ token, and can be traded on a recently launched marketplace.
It’s an unique take on game marketing. Game developers often promote their games through magazines, websites and video advertisement. Bigger marketing campaigns might allow for in-game events, like the promotion of The Avengers movie in Fortnite. But thanks to blockchain technology developers can add a new layer of immersion, because an in-game item might motivate a player even more to give a game a try.
With Tides of Magic they use the system the other way around. Gamers who play blockchain games already have certain items, and now suddenly these items can also be used in a new game. It might provide a motivation to give the upcoming card game a try.
